                   When Narcissus Altered the Earth: Ecological Themes in Therapy

Workshop Details
With the myth of Narcissus as our starting point, this exploration will consider meaning and purpose in relation to a view of human beings as a “planet altering species” (Brian Swimme). Crucially, the day will consider core ecological themes, such as our relationship with the natural world, and the challenge of listening to the “voices” of the earth (Theodore Roszak). We will also consider the psychological impact of environmental issues when presented in therapy, for instance, as grief, guilt, fear, anxiety, and so on, and the challenge of finding meaning in a rapidly changing world. A key focus for this day will be on how ecological themes come into therapy, and the way the therapist might recognise the often subtle nature of these, and address them.
This practical exploration will involve theoretical input, and discussion, and participants are requested to bring a dream containing a nature theme.
About the presenter
Michael Wilson is a UKCP registered psychotherapist, transpersonal psychologist, and ecopsychologist, practising both in Edinburgh and Berwick-upon-Tweed.
